    How to make fake water?

I need to a biology project where I need to fill up an aquarium type of habitat with a type of fake water. I can't use anything perishable or made out of food items, so jello and sugar is out of the picture. I can't use hair gel either because it doesn't dry and can evaporate. It needs to cover quite some space, so I want to know the cheapest way to fill up my fake aquarium with quite a bit of fake water, without blowing my wallet. It needs to dry hard by the way. It's not shallow, and you need to be able to see through the substance. Is there something out there I can buy? Even better, is there anything I can make so its cheaper? Can someone give me suggestions?

Real gelatin would be good (it sets up a little brownish though, more like the water of a river, but you could color it a bit with food color while mixing it up), and real gelatin is not the same thing as Jello. Jello has gelatin in it but sets up a soft, wiggly, sugar and artificial-flavored food. Gelatin has been used for all kinds of things over the years, including glue, and is much firmer with no added "foods/sugar," etc.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gelatin

If you can't use gelatin, then you'd have other possibilities with various degrees of cost, realism, etc.

    The simplest might be:
...a painting you create (or an image you find) that looks like water or look like underwater, then place something shiny on top of it --perphaps plastic wrap or a sheet of glass or acrylic...or a coat or two of clear gloss finish (like polyurethane, clear fingernail polish, decoupage medium (ModPodge, etc, or just a permanent white glue like Elmers GlueAll thinned down about 3 or 4 to 1 with water which is the same thing), acrylic medium, etc.

For something you could actually pour into a depresssion of some kind, which would be thicker and more realistic, use a liquid like:
    ...gloss polyurethane ...perhaps acrylic medium
...an epoxy resin ...that's the material that's usually used in models and dioramas for the water (it will be clear, but can be made to have some disturbed "white water" or like it's falling or flowing) but you'd have to buy that (about $10 at craft or hobby stores, or about 8 oz ... common brands would be Envirotex Lite:
http://images.google.com/images?um=1&hl=en&tbs=isch:1&sa=1&q=Envirotex+Lite and Ultra Glo, and at home improvement places, something called "bartop resin" will be the same thing... even Easy Cast would be fine for this)
......don't buy a *polyester* resin though unless you don't mind if the surface is tacky, or it's a little cloudy if you buy the kind intended to be used for fiberglass
.....there is another kind of epoxy resin that's sold to create the look of water too and is used in "containers" like glass vases that might hold fake flowers (it also holds the flower stems in place after curing), but that kind will also be a little more gel-like that the regular very-hard epoxy resins (it would be found in the floral dept of a craft store like Michaels or perhaps at flower shops)
...all resins will take at least 24 hrs to cure though (they don't technically "dry")

You don't say exactly what *volume* of the watery looking stuff you need though in the aquarium, and if you need to use a *lot* that could make some of these things cost more than you might want to spend (like the resins), and make. Also, most epoxy resins shouldn't be poured more than about 1/2" deep if you want to be sure they'll be totally clear after curing, though the Easy Cast or the floral setting resins can be poured much deeper than that without problems.

You might also want to check out the discussion about various ways of simulating water on this page of my site:
    http://glassattic.com/polymer/other_materials.htm ...click on *Faux Water*
...it talks a lot about using resins for that, but also has a category called *Simulations of Resin*
