What should I do about the Arizona immigration law?
I am 3rd generation Mexican-American, but I'm pretty dark-skinned and speak Spanish all the time so it's bound that I'll get stopped eventually here in Arizona. What type of identification do I need to not get arrested?
Here is what I carry in my wallet:
Arizona Driver's license, Arizona level one fingerprint clearance card, University of Arizona ID card, Copy of birth certificate (born in Texas), Arizona issued Access health care card.
Do I need the original birth certificate and a proof of residency (such as an electric bill statement)? Also do I need any kind of genetic samples?
Law states that any law official can ask for documents based on suspicion. No law has to be broken for this to occur. Arizona and I'm sure every other state asks for ID when someone is pulled over for breaking the law.
You have more than enough to convince non-Hispanic Arizona cops that the overkill in your identification documents will mitigate their "reasonable suspicion" that you may be an illegal based on the color of your skin.
Edit: No worries, Amare, because the Arizona law will be repealed simply because it's unconstitutional. However, the federal government really needs to do something about closing the border between Arizona and Mexico, but it is NOT doing a good job. To me, illegal is still illegal - I just do not accept racial profiling masquerading as a solution to Arizona's illegal immigration problem.
