Can I use leather sealant or protector on this within damaging the design?
Leather will always fade to a certain extent. It will to a certain extent depend on how well it is finished and how stable the pigments are that have been used. You could give it a coat of clear finish which will boost what is already on there.
If you do nothing else you should use a good water based leather protector which will help inhibit wear to the finish by dirt and body oils (particularly from the hands)
