The Rocks Markets, held every Saturday and Sunday (and Fridays nights in November) at the northern end of George Street, is perfect for gift and souvenir shopping-it has more the 150 stalls selling quality exotic crafts, home wares, jewellery and Australian-designed goods, and it all takes place in the shadow of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
The sheepskin Shop moved to its present location in The Rocks {139 George Street} in 1958 from its original base in the south-eastern pylon of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. They prefer suppliers from Australia and New Zealand using only the highest quality skins, leathers and fibres in their merchandise. Their range includes sheepskins, sheepskin coats, sheepskins footwear, Akubra hats, oilskin coats; kangaroo, calf hide and crocodile leather wallets, belts and accessories. Fine Food and casual dining
The history of dining at The Rocks goes back a long way. The excavation of a campfire on the site of the current Shangri-La hotel has revealed that, more than 500 years ago, a group of Aborigines forgot some of Australia's the Cadigal tribe prepared a tempting meal of bream, rock oysters and other shellfish there - no doubt enjoying the superb views across Sydney Harbour.
Today, the views are just as spectacular while the eating options have expanded - you can still get fresh seafood, of course, but now you can choose from Japanese, Chinese, German, Thai, modern Australian and a raft of pub, bistro and café fare. For fine dining, don't even bother trying to decide between modern French delights at Quay, the delicious contemporary Australian cuisine at Rockpool or Yoshii Ryuichi's innovative "Kaiseki" style Japanese at Yoshi -set your sight on all three. The experience ay each contrasting There are plenty of other places to indulge your palate in the Rocks, fine Italian dinning, Sailors Thai -ranked as Australia's best Thai Restaurant by the country's national restaurant association and a favourite of the food critics the world over-and Wildfire which boasts one of the country's best wine lists.
You can also nestle in at Castle cove-where the views are second to none-and enjoy some of Sydney's best seafood at waterfront or a prime Hereford beef steak at Wolfie's grill. The Rocks has a fantastic range of entertainment with something for just about everyone, including an annual program of free public events that attract thousands of people every year.
