How long do I need to stay in Istanbul?
What is the minimum amount of time that I should spend in istanbul, Turkey. In the time needed I would like to visit all the main sights (The Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Grand Bazaar, etc).
You definitely would not want to make a visit to a city as historic and exciting as Constantinople a two-day, whirlwind, typical package tour sort of stop. As with any foreign city, you must allow time to become oriented to the city (a city tour is helpful in this respect, as you can make notes of places you will want to return to and visit in depth, and your tour guide can be an excellent source of advice and information). You also wouldn't want to dash through the major sites and landmarks just to snap a few pix and run on to the next place. Even James Bond took time to properly explore the Hagia Sophia! (OK, so he was rendezvousing with a gorgeous Soviet agent and also needed a few minutes to kill one of the bad guys while he was there. Watch "From Russia With Love" for some great location cinematography.) In all, allow a minimum of four days to fully embrace, explore and appreciate Istanbul, but if you can, add two or three days more. Have a great trip!
