Bulls Nylon
Best lead rope to buy the won't break/snap?
I have an OTTB that pulls back and has snapped....oh probably 5 or 6 different lead ropes and 2 halters. He needs work on ground manners and tying, but I can't work with him if he gets his 'reward' of the rope breaking everytime he pulls.
I have tried nylon with a bolt snap, cotton with a bolt snap, and cotton with a bull snap. All have broken at the snap. The halters broke at the poll strap.
Does anyone know of a good, sturdy lead? I don't mind paying alot for it, I just need one that won't break. Im thinking maby a thick cotton lead with a heavy bull snap?
I've also seen one where its like a safety snap (the ones used in cross ties) but you have to twist the bottom to 'lock' it in place. Has anyone used these? are they sturdy?

Thanks. Yes, for now we walk him down to the show barn and put him in cross ties. We can't keep taking him down there though, as he's not in that barn's program.
I suggest a heavy duty halter (which can be bought in many tack shops and even over the internet at places like www.horse.com )Then put on two or even three lead ropes. Tie the horse up solid and leave it for a couple to three hours. Make sure all the lead ropes have about the same amount of slack and that the object you tie them to can not be broken.
In addition bull snaps are much heavier and stronger than trigger snaps.
Once a horse learns he can break leads then it is hard to get them to stop. This method typically works. In fact I used the technique on a friends gelding yesterday after it broke two lead ropes in a few minutes.
As far as tying your horse to something solid being dangerous.... It is far more dangerous for your horse to break something it is tied to and get out in the road or somewhere else that it could get hurt than to tie it up solid. Every horse needs to learn to be tied. For its safety and for the safety of any handlers. What if it has to be examined while something is spooking it.
When something bothers your horse, that is the time to keep doing whatever is bothering it until the horse learns to accept it. That includes tying.

She decided to lead him to a hay bag full of recently cut and dried hay. She clipped the polished silver bull snap to Nocoto’s light blue nylon halter and started leading him to his heavily bedded box stall that contained his gritty salt lick, full, sapphire colored water bucket, and wine colored net hay bag.
