How far should free speach go in a classroom?
In Ben Stein's trailer for Expelled, he mentioned that schools were scilencing ID scientists - limiting free speach. (He also makes the claim that religion is the only place where free speach is not allowed, which I dissagree with).
When should free speach be limited? Should ideas protected by free speach be taught to our children? At what point should a teacher be fired for speaking of taboo subjects?
It's my right to believe and say eating a lb of sugar a day is part of a healthy diet, however, is it okay to say this in a health class? Cigarrette companies have/had "evidence" that smoking did not link to cancer. Should a teacher be allowed to present this in front of a class? There are books that advocate pedofiles. Shouldn't a teacher be fired for suggesting students be "open-minded" and read them?
But on the flip side, what is to prevent suffocation of fresh thoughts and necessary knowledge?
Where should we draw the line? Should we even have a line?
When people voluntarily associate they give up some rights to free speech, such as the right to interrupt everyone else. People adopt rules (such as Robert's Rules of Order) that govern exercise of speech, limiting time, order, and subject matter while in that association. Members of a Jane Austen Book Club want to discuss jane Austen & not be distracted by someone who wants to talk about Mickey Spillane's books. People who can't follow such rules get booted.
Government is an INVOLUNTRY association. So we modern Europeans & Americans tend to believe that government should NOT limit the freedom to discuss anything they want. But that can be disruptive too. After all we don't want people showing up at government hospitals interfering with medical procedures or barging into training classes to protest government policies. The point is, even the government has the power to limit speech for utilitarian reasons. Same with children's public schools. The legislature which creates & pays for the schools decides what subjects they want their employees (teachers) to teach. So long as that doesn't violate the state or Federal Constitutions (such as via preaching a particular religion) they can prescribe anything they want. If they want their teachers open minded with wide latitude to suggest alternate sources of information & allow class discussion; fine. If not, fine too. Personally, I much prefer the former. But I've seen so many nit-wits teaching, that I understand the legislative need for limits.

I believe the forefathers when creating free speech philosphy didn't take in consideration of the future. (well they didn't realize their statement that all men are created equal).
Freedom of speech when governed by another body has the right to restrict it. Now if that teacher decides to open his/her own school they can do what they want. Otherwise being under one person they can govern those limits.
