New 85 Gal Saltwater Aquarium Protein Skimmer and equipment.?
Hello,
I am hoping to get a little help here. I just started a 85 gal saltwater aquarium. I am very new to the hobby as well as new to aquariums period! As any saltwater people no any where you go you get different answers!
Well let me break it down. I have an 85 gal tank, a wet/dry filter, a 400 watt heater, a light, a hood, stand and lid. We decided against live sand and live rock (although I am still contemplating the live rock...?)
I still haven't purchased a Protein skimmer. So this is part of my question. What is a good protein skimmer and pump that will not break my wallet but will be worth the money. Also is there any other equipment that I seem to be leaving out?? What are 'powerheads' and how to I get bubbles in the tank?!?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! We started with 10 tiny damsels to get the cycle going. It is been a full week and we lost two fish already!! HELP!
Seaclear is a good protein skimmer, but right now that is the least of your worries. I have been keeping SW for some time now and you need more than just a filter and a protein skimmer. You need two power heads, they blow the water around causing the water to rock back and forth like the ocean. You also need live rock AND live sand, this is going to seed your filter. If you have damsels dying then something is very off, damsels can survive almost any condition, but I do not recommend them, they can kill a fish four times their size. Unless you plan on keeping just damsels I would take them back to the LFS. The live rock and sand will cycle out your tank within weeks a lot faster than the fish (and you don't have to kill any fish). You must be patient in this hobby. 85 gallons is a good starter tank though, you can keep a lot of fish in there. A wet/dry is the best filter you can have as well. To get bubbles in your tank get an air stone, but watch out it will raise your PH levels. You can get an air pump cheap at pet smart as well. The fish will also need plenty of hiding places like grass and live rock. You want to try to replicate their natural environment as much as possible. Stability is also a good product if you decide to keep the damsels, it prevents early tank death, you can get that at pet smart as well. Also get Instant Ocean sea salt. It is the best out there. You will want to add inverts first, crabs, snails, things like that. they are going to make your job a whole lot easier. Also keep up with your water changes, at least 10% a week to keep the rest of your damsels alive. I do not recommend water changes during the cycling process, but you have already added fish. A lot of this hobby in the beginning is just sitting and staring at an empty tank full of rock and sand. I know that sounds boring, but it is a must really. Also get a testing kit, I prefer API saltwater kit, it is very accurate. Test everyday during the cycle, then every three days after. Also test for magnesium, this will keep your alkalinity and PH in check. I hope I was helpful, there is so much more to this but I don't want to take up all the space LOL. You will be fine, just be patient.
