How do you count cards in black jack?
I just watched the movie 21, and I don't understand how to keep track of cards. If you are a black jack fan, this question is for you.
It cant be learned overnight, and you will need to buy one or more books on it, and read them ten times before you finally understand what card counting TRUELY is.
Most people have this sense that "there are lots of high cards coming" or a higher than normal concentration of them in the remaining decks, and while this is true to some extent, its not really what card counting was intended to predict, and it doesnt mean you will be playign with an advanatge just because lots of "low cards" have been dealt, theres other variable involved
Card counting is a means of measuring the "CHANGE IN EV" (EV is short for expected value, and is basically the same as the house advantage) as a result of the whitnessed cards being dealt. If you arnt familier with the concept of a "house advantage" you should familierise yourself with it.
Say at the top of a freshly shuffled deck, the house advantage is 0.5% and you see one single card removed, now the house advantage is 0.48%....now a second card is removed and suddenly the house edge is 0.32%. why? because the house edge is the result of EVERY SINGLE possible way that every card in the deck to be dealt can play out, being added together. when you remove a card from the cards to be dealt, suddenly some possibilities become more or less probible, changing the sum of all possible outcomes of the game.
Every type of card has some effect on the house advantage, some more than others, but every card, when removed changes the odds of the game ver so slightly.
Card counters assign point values to the cards, that roughly represent the change they have on the game relevant to other types of cards, by adding the point values of the cards, you get a rough estimation of the change in EV as a result of those cards being dealt. They may roughly represent the change when viewed one at a time, but if points are spread appropriately, the rough estimation iover the sum of dozen of cards dealt will be fairly accurate most fo the time.
By knowing the change in ev as a result of cards being dealt, and knowing the ehisting house advantage, making it predictable and exposingyourself to it by using optimum playing strategy, the player can detect when the house edge lies with the player as a result of the change in EV being greater than the exhisting house advantage itself, yeilding a PLAYER advantage. This will happen in about 20-30% of all hands whitness, once you can detect that, you just have to watch and wait for the oportune moments to place bets, then slowly reap in profits.
Thats how card counting works, how its done could not be summerised in any single small article, it take s along time to learn how to count cards with a winning expectation dues to the many variables involved, ill just toss some at you so you knwo what i mean.
