Nixon 51-30 All Gold Tide Watch #1
Could Obama fall into a Nixon trap?
I was watching the Frost Nixon interview movie and then I did some research. In the movie Nixon got caught in the political trap of self-righteous indignation by fearing the enemy including the American people. Nixon's paranoia got thrown in a warp and saw the enemy on all fronts especially the media and Liberals. Nixon as you know got elected on the promise that he would end the Vietnam war and bring peace. And like the Vietnam war the Iraq war are both the brain child ideas of Henry Kissinger.
Don't forget to fast forward and realize that we now have domestic

domestic surveillance
You have a good point Rhonda
I watched that movie the other night and was wondering the parallels myself. I’m less worried about Obama then I am about the lingering impact of the Bush administration and it’s policies.
I don’t see Obama getting locked in like Nixon did. He doesn’t have the political damage to undo and unlike Nixon or Bush he’s using executives orders to release information rather then suppress it.
In his race with McCain he issued a challenge nobody wanted to take up, temperament. While McCain was complaining he wouldn’t have town hall debates Obama called him out on temperament saying “that is a debate I am willing to have”. It was a debate McCain wasn’t willing to have and it lends a credibility to his authenticity as a president. With that he is also a Chicago politician and with the comes the politics.
The issue with Nixon was a narrow world view, personal demons and power. The Obama administration redefined a electorate in the way Kennedy did in 1960. He is the youthful president who used the internet in a real way without condescension to the internet generation. In 1960 When Kennedy ran against Nixon the world had their first televised debates and Nixon had his baggage. His interview with Frost in my view went bad because he underestimated the interviewer and had an issue with his temper. There were elements of paranoia in his affect and temperament that overpowered his political sense. He was hijacked by his ego and the need to defend the actions and merit of his decisions. He as things unfolded became desperate to defend his actions and his legacy and he made an attempt to triangulate with his office. That’s were we got the quote “it’s not wrong when the president does it”, the Frost got you moment. The difference is Nixon and Bush shaped policy to their personalities rather then letting policy shape their personality, they fell into the ulitmate patriarchial arrogance that plauges old school republicans.
I may be naïve but I believe when being in power having a mindful temperament can make a huge difference. I would compare Obama to Lincoln who faced with the politics of his day and slavery made the decision then put the motivation for that on paper. A lot of crap has been given to Obama for his book but he wrote it and he writes his speeches. There is something to be said about a president who doesn’t get their speaking cues from speech writers.
I don’t think he will fall in the Nixon trap because he posses key distinguishing traits that Nixon did not, George Bush did not and Kennedy did. They are simple traits he understands words and he self governs his temperament not needing social cues along the way. His world view is not small he understands the need of the country to move past or WWII mindset. A constitutional lawyer rather then a master in business who failed upward with a little help from his fathers friends.
He’s a grass roots organizer and I believe his critics including Hillary Clinton underestimated the merit of that. He motivated change from the bottom up and drew the disenfranchised into the process he made them believe they could have some part. He redefined electorate and built a ground game that nurtured change, he is forward thinking, Nixon was not. He doesn’t see the world through a gird of enemies but of opportunities without inflating the immediate return on those opportunities. He sees the world through a sense of the kaleidoscope, Nixon did not, each piece in it’s scope creates the picture and that the passion of community organizers that McCain and Hillary didn’t get. The piece Bush and Nixon don’t have for them their piece was larger and they needed to defend only their piece, they were afraid of allies.
