Cloth pocket nappy/diaper?
I am wanting to use cloth nappies for when my little girl gets here but have a lot of friends that have struggled with them. Just wanting to know if anybody has used pocket nappies/diapers (as nobody i know has) and what you thought of them??
I have 3 children and my youngest is now 9 months and I have just started to use pocket nappies. I wish I had found them earlier! I really like them. My friend who makes them uses the cutest material for the outside and uses a bamboo material for the booster insert which is really absorbent. Have a look at www.fairyfabrics.com they sell the material and the pattern if you know how to sew or know anyone who does.
I pay $25AU per nappy, but I am saving that much a week on disposables by having 5 nappies to reuse. I am getting more made, I would like to have 10. I will still use disposables at night, but you can get thicker boosters for nighttime use.
I tried the usual cloth nappies that you have to fold and I would NEVER do that again. Towelling material feels wet after 1 wee and they are too much work to fold all the time. But the pocket nappies (depending on what they are made from) keep baby feeling dry until they are quite wet. Mine last for 2-3 hours before needing to be changed.

Cloth diapering: using prefolds with pocket diapers?
I'm pregnant with my 3rd child, considering the switch to cloth diapers. First two kids were well over 8lbs at birth, long and skinny whole life, 3rd kid will probably follow suit, if that affects what products you recommend. I've just about decided on BumGenius One-size 3.0, but I'm wondering why the inserts for any pocket diapers HAVE to go inside the pocket? Why can't you just put the insert (or a prefold folded in thirds) on top? We've done this with disposable doublers with disposable diapers before with success, but just for overnight wetting on older babies. It would seem to me that the absorbency would be where you need it, any stains would be on the insert and not the diaper itself, and it would make laundering easier since you wouldn't have to separate them to wash and dry and then put them back together. Does it move too much that way? More likely to leak? I can't be the first person to have thought of this, so there must be a reason this method isn't publicized.
The point of the pocket diaper is to wick moisture away from the baby's bottom. The interior fabric is made of fleece, micro suede, velour or minkee and acts as a stay-dry liner. You can lay doublers or prefolds on top of the interior fabric but then there is no point in having the fleece interior then and you may as well just be using a PUL cover, which is half the price or less than a pocket diaper.
Laying things on top can create bunching and moving around. I prefer putting stuff in a pocket diaper as it stays put that way. You can put pre-folds inside the pocket if you want.
