Advice on HDTVs for gaming?
I'm looking into buying an HDTV for playing video games on. The TV won't be used for actual TV viewing, just video games. I'm especially worried about the often-documented lag problems. I want one that's at least 30", 16:9, but what else should I be looking for?
I play mostly Wii, PS2, and Xbox 360, along with games on a large collection of retro consoles. I also play a lot of music/rhythm games, notably Dance Dance Revolution and Guitar Hero. Thus, lag problems would be devastating. Quality sound is also important.
I'm working with a limited budget so I'm looking at a 32" Element HDTV from Circuit City ( http://tinyurl.com/2vtvbq ) but I can spend more if there's sufficient reason.
I own a 32'' LCD from Fujitsu Siemens. The Lag you are worried of, are for Plasma HDTV's. Games that are timing crucial like Guitar Hero for example, can be adjusted for this lag.
However, on my TV I never had problems with lag.
The only console however, that is able to get a HDTV picture out of your TV is the Xbox 360. The Wii and PS2 are all unable to get HDTV resolutions. So will the retro consoles.
I have a Super NES, Dreamcast, N64 and Gamecube running on my LCD. However, as with a normal TV picture, the LCD will upscale it, and the picture will look as blurry as a standard TV picture.
The page of your LCD doesn't show Scart or AV inputs. Only S-Video, Composite and HDMI.
Try to find a LCD, that has SCART, Component, Composite, S-Video, HDMI and a PC Monitor connection (DVI and/or 15-SubD).
The Xbox 360 will need Component to get a HDTV picture, as well as the Wii for a 480p EDTV resolution. The PS2 will need a SCART input for a crispy sharp RGB picture.
