Taxi Wallet

Experience with Philippine taxi service?
I have had one bad and one very good experience.
First the bad.
The driver wanted to take me thru side streets to reach my destination. I told him to stay on main street. He got angry and I said "stop". I got off and reported him to taxi service.
The good experience. I lost my wallet in a Maligaya taxi. I know it came out in the taxi so I called the office and gave taxi number and time. The driver had found it and returned to office. Nothing was taken and I was very happy and satisfied that I gave him a 1000 Peso reward. There are honest taxi drivers in the Philippines.
What is your experience, good or bad?
It is only the big cities that have taxis.
Small cities and towns, in my experience, rely on tricycles. A motor bike with side car or other arrangement which seats up to 10 Filipinos. See some here:

Some tricycle drivers, in my experience, see foreigners as akin to winning the lottery. They will try and take you for all they can! Of course most will give you a fair deal. The thing with tricycles is that they are public transport. If you want to get the Filipino rate, you have to let Filipinos you don't know ride with you. If you just want to travel on your own, you should agree a price before you start. Of course, if you are new to the Philippines, the price might seem really good, even if it is a rip off price. An example of this happened to my mother in 1995. We got off the boat and there were only Pot Pot's to take us to our accommodation. A Pot Pot has different names in different parts of the Philippines but is a bicycle with a side car. See some here

When we got to our accommodation, my mother was telling us how cheap the ride was. She only paid P20 (about $1 at the time). I said well I am pleased you are happy but the normal cost is only P2
I have been catching taxis in Manila and Cebu City since 1994.
In Manila, I always find it a chore to get a taxi off the street that will use the meter. However, when getting a taxi at a mall, usually they will turn on the meter straight away because they know you have a slip of paper in your hand telling how to complain if you are unhappy.
In 1995 or 1996, there was a group of 4 of us travelling from Manila to Tacloban and we were running late for our plane. When we got in the taxi and told the driver we were late, I think he asked for P200 extra to get us to the plane on time. So we agreed! We had a very exciting ride to the airport which consisted of the taxi driving on the footpath (sidewalk) and going the wrong way up one way streets. We arrived on time at the airport. After dropping us off, I saw the taxi circle around and come back towards us. My ex wife had forgotten her handbag and he passed it out the window to us.
Cebu City is a completely different story to Manila. In my experience, 99% of taxis turn on the meter without being asked. It wasn't always so. If you think only foreigners will get ripped off by taxis, you are wrong. About 5 or 6 years ago, the president's daughter arrived at the airport in Cebu and got in a taxi. The driver tried to rip her off. He lost his licence! But more than that, the government introduced new stringent taxi laws and very soon all taxis were doing the right thing for fear of losing their licence too.
When I was living in Cebu City, I found that I was catching so many taxis that the drivers would tell me where I was going. One day I got in a taxi to go somewhere other than normal and when the taxi driver told me where I was going and I just said yes ...... because I didn't want to dissapoint him. I also found that these drivers knowing that I am a kuripot Australian who doesn't tip, would just round the meter. For instance, if the meter said P52.50, they would just say, give me P50.
I also had one experience where the taxi driver knew where to take me and I had never ridden with him before. I got in the taxi and said to the driver that I was going to my office. He said .....I know! I tried to tell him where I was going and he wouldn't let me, he just said....I know! As we were driving along, I confirmed that I had never ridden with him before. He started to take a different route than I normally would go. I again tried to tell him where to go but he wouldn't let me. He waved his hand at me and said....I know! When we came within sight of my office, he pointed and said..... your office! He really did know!
Another time, on a trip some where other than to my office, I left some discs in the taxi. I don't remember ever riding with that driver before either but later on that day, I had just left my office to walk to the mall and the driver came past and handed me the discs through the window.
I hope this is what you were looking for!
