Draught Metal Frame
Replacing the threshold on a front door?
I suppose that is what they call the metal plate that is with the door on installation. I have a front door that had a piece with rubber in it to prevent the drafts. This being an older house it wore out so I thought I could get a replacement...but nothing I have bought works so far. The replacements I see are suppose to go on the door bottom but this one came off the plate itself. Now my ? is with the options I see....to buy....how much trouble is it tearing out the original threshold there....you know it has the molding and door frame on top of it but I think I can get it out completely and see that Lowes and Home Depot offer replacements. Is this too much of a job?
Tearing out the Bottom Door Sill is a big job as it is usually fastened up into both sides of the frame. All you really need is the aluminum threshold which is where the rubber insert fits into. This aluminum threshold is installed on top of the wood door sill. It is notched to fit around the door frame sides. The screws are right in the middle under where the rubber insert fits. Unscrew these screws and slide the aluminum threshold out. Take it to the hardware store or home center and get a new one. Just make sure you get one that is the same thickness as the old one, otherwise you may get one too thick or thin which means if it's too thin you will have a gap under the door. Too thick and you will have to cut the bottom of the door off.

weatherproofing my apartment?
My windows in my apartment have no caulk around the frames and I can feel a draft coming through them I want to go ahead a caulk it but Im not sure if the caulk will work properly with the metal being so cold, also my doors have no weather-stripping so I plan on doing that too.. I have two questions will the caulk work on cold metal? and can you think of anything else I can do to help weatherproof my apartment?
caulking around the frame is known as stormseals and effectively seal the frame to the reveal, preventing water and wind entry. it is appropriate to seal the joint. best to go to local hardware and discuss the problem and they will advise of a product suitable for the temperature. check the fibre/rubber seals to the opening elements on the window frames as well and replace as necessary.
