I would like to honor them.I found three links.Any others?
How can we prevent this from happening?
I found a few websites as I said and a lot had to do with gunfire and motorcycle and auto accidents.Their were a few heart attacks.And a few other things.

2008 numbers were at 41 foe officers killed by felonious assault. This years number will be much higher
2008 officer killed on duty by accident (usually traffic) 68. This number has trended down in the last few years.

Prevention of officers killed by felonious assault comes with the respect and fear of consequences among the criminal element. This has been lost in the last few years fo r lots of reasons.
Prevention is actually much more important than court retribution once caught.
If bad guys learn before they use deadly force against a police officer that any force used against an officer will result in swift and decisive action fewer will progress to more serious actions.
