How can you expand a heavy duty spring to attach it at both ends?
On my industrial type Honda mower (UM21) there is a foot lever to raise and lower the deck. I have had to take this to peices to obtain a replacement lever. From the base of the lever to the mower frame I need to refit a simple but very strong spring with attachment hooks at both ends. The spring is about 6" long and 1" in diameter. You cannot stretch this by hand it is extremely strong. Is there a tool or device for stretching such springs? It needs to stretch about 1" to fit back in position. (Note motorcycle spring pullers would not be effective).
Any tips most welcome.
A solid, strong lever is needed. I have usually used a crowbar, pinch bar or a large screwdriver.
Set on side onto the hook and with the pry bar under the hook and resting on the attachment, raise the bar until the hook slides down and onto the attachment. It is nor difficult, but be careful, heavy duty springs like that can cause major hurts to you!
By the way, how did you get it off?

Where can I find no-sew hook/loop closures like those used on Columbia pants?
I'm looking for a very heavy-duty, no-sew hook and loop closure similar to those used on Columbia pants (used for waistband adjustment). I have a pair of textile motorcycle pants and want to add second closure that can be hammered or pressed into place through multiple layers of fabric just like heavy duty snaps used on jeans. These fasteners sometimes have a plastic cap over them on the outside but that is not required. I have seen the Dritz no-sew hook and eyes, but they are not exactly what I am looking for.

You might also call the folks around you who work on motorcycle leathers to see if they've got a spare or two they'd be willing to sell you.
The notions available at retail are far more limited than those manufacturers can get via wholesale. If you're near a garment district, you might ask around. Personally, I've always found the sew-in style more satisfactory than clamp-on.
