Medallion Black Leather
German Military Hat Question...Similar to Otto von Bismark's hat?
I am researching a hat that I have come across and know that it is legitimately old- as in pre WWI but between the 1870's and 1910's, I believe . It is very similar to the one worn by Otto von Bismarck in this picture below. It is black though, with gold trim around the entire brim of the hat, leather chinstraps and lining and the medallion and pointy thing are also gold colored. Any ideas what the name for this type of hat is, or where I can do more research about it would be greatly appreciated!!

It is a picklehaube and was worn by most German states, including Prussia. The fact that yours has a spike (the pointy thing) means that it was for an arm of service other than artillery (eg. infantry, guards etc) since the artillery version ended in a ball fitting. The medallion on the front of the helmet is what will enable you to identify which German state it can from. Most are Prussian and have a large eagle style badge on the front, but many other states such as Hess, Bavaria, Saxony etc issued picklehaubes as well and normally used their state crest as part of the central badge.
You should be aware, however, that not all pickelhaubes are German since a number of other armies copied these between 1870 and 1914. The US Army wore a form of picklehaube as a full dress helmet during the latter part of the 19th century. The key to identifying it is to show the medallion on the front so if you post a photo of that here I can try and help further.
