Does white gold plating a yellow gold ring devalue it?
I've inherited a yellow gold diamond ring, but I'd like to have it plated in white gold so it matches my other rings.
Would this devalue the ring at all?
The ring is solid yellow gold (not sure how many carats) with 5 diamonds in a row, and it's about 100 years old.
That's a tricky one. In my opinion it would.
First of all, the ring is an antique piece of jewelry and they get more valuable if they are in their original condition.
Second, if you want to sell it, a 'white gold person' probably won't want it as the plating (rhodium not white gold) will wear off and with the yellow gold underneath that will look ugly or you need to re-plate it regularly.
Third, a yellow gold person would have to get the plating removed, but as far as I know, with rhodium plating, it would have to be physical removal. Polish as long as it takes to take the rhodium off. Might not work completely depending on design and might get quite expensive.
I realize, it's better to wear the ring than have it sit in the drawer, but maybe, stock up on a few yellow gold pieces (good excuse to go shopping) and wear the yellow collection on special occasions.
