What's Involved In Becoming A Volunteer Fire-Fighter?
The worst ever Australian natural disaster 'Black Saturday' has left my heart broken. I live in Victoria but don't personally know anyone who has lost family or houses - But I do know people who have been evacuated and are still at risk.
173 people are now confirmed dead - although this number is expected to climb to atleast 250. 1600+ people have lost their houses.
With global warming this is said to become more frequent - it's scary, and I want to be there to help.
What are the requirements involved in becoming a volunter firefighter?
Is there a certain level of fitness required?
Are you re-imbursed for days of work that you miss?
How often are you on call?
What events do you have to attend (aside from fires) and how frequently?
How open are businesses to hiring a volunteer firefighter (are they supportive of the time you take off work?)
My thoughts and prayers go out to the many victoms and all those who have lost so much in this disaster!
Greetings, and Much empathy for the fire victims in Australia. I'm a volunteer/career fire fighter. With volunteering, you have to take an agility test, and give of your time. Volunteering is just that, jobs aren't going to let you off to run calls, on your spare time you go on calls. You are required to have a certain amount of calls for your station. If you drop below that then you have to have a talk with that station captain. You're required to a certain amount of training/courses. It's a wonderful thing to do. Depending on what type of reimbursement clause the volunteer service has, it all depends. Check with the fire service you want to become a part of . It's the best move I've ever made.

What my Volunteer Firefighter POV Would Be
How can I volunteer abroad as a LPN, former EMT and Firefighter?
I have been a labor & delivery nurse at a large trauma hospital for 5 years, and a pediatric nurse at a large childrens hospital for 5 years. I am only a LPN. I am also a former EMT and volunteered as a fireifghter for 6 years in NC. I am a woman but am also a black belt and very physically capable. I would like to learn if anyone knows who accepts LPN's for volunteering abroad. I know it doesn't sound like someone like myself can do much but when I see that Dr Sanjay Gupta is left alone overnight w/over 25 critical patients to care by himslef I do feel that even someone w/o an RN title can still do alot of good. I wouldn't go home when it gets dark, or hard, or I'm tired. This makes me sick to see. Any Advice for volunteering? I would pay my own way right now if I could. Thanks, Tracie.
